Everybody knows the value of a great first impression. In only seconds of your meeting, people attain various information regarding us. They notice our face, hair, clothing, bodily proportions, posture, demeanor and also the sound of our voice. It’s an important time since there is no second chance to make a good first impression.
It happens … the handshake.
I once took a communications class with a nearby church. The instructor had 30+ attendees line up single file. The instructions could look him in the eye and shake his hand. I used to be confident I knew how you can properly shake hands.
After the last person shook the instructor’s hand, he asked, “Tell me what you considered my handshake. Was it an excellent handshake or a bad handshake?” I liked his handshake. It absolutely was a company grip like mine. His handshake confirmed in my experience I knew how you can shake hands. I said, exactly, “good handshake.”
He then said a thing that completely required unexpectedly.
He was quoted saying the main reason everybody liked his handshake was simple. He mirrored ours. When the handshake was firm, his was firm. When it was obviously a light touch, his was obviously a light touch. When they used their opposite to know his, his other hand grasped theirs. He stated this handshake technique creates an instant good impression and likeability.
Likeability?
Yes. It’s just like the way we feel whenever we meet a stranger and discover we share the same name. Or when in conversation with a stranger, we learn we share a mutual friend. We magically like that person. This is why I think of it as the Magical Handshake.
From this point on, I suggest you never, ever, shake another person’s hand. Instead, permit them to shake yours. Mirror the things they’re doing. If you’re offered a firm grip, mirror a strong grip. If you’re offered a soft grip, mirror a soft grip. Be sure you mirror the shake too. It’s by pointing out grip and shake.
The sole exception is when someone gives you a handshake using their palm facing down. As you shake hands, they have the upper-hand and so are in charge. They dominate. This is what’s called a hostile handshake.
When offered a hostile handshake, respond by giving them a Double-Handed handshake using a wee turn. Start by having your palms slightly upwards, grasping their hand with both of yours. Then, straighten their handshake vertically having a wee turn as you’re shaking. This communicates for them, “we are equal.”
Next time you would like to produce a good first impression, provide the Magical Handshake an attempt. Take action once you park and fly people. It’s a straightforward, surefire approach to improve your likeability factor.
