It’s said that history is written from the victor — that in the aftermath of conflict, the defeated are often portrayed being a collective, detestable mass that follows a similarly repulsive value system. Yet, though his Confederate Army was a student in the losing end of America’s Civil War, Robert E. Lee is remembered as among the most celebrated generals in American history.
Rational ideas of armed conflict presume that defeated soldiers must be denounced, not exalted; punished, not praised; and despised, not admired. However, Lee is entirely from the latter. What made one man, one soldier, stand out that he is remembered by more Americans today than many of his victorious Union counterparts?
Unfortunately, this is a question a large number of volumes of books experienced trouble answering. And, I suspect which you have no desire (through this moment, at least) to read content of these depth and breadth (and i also admit that we could not write it). Nonetheless, if I needed to describe the real reason for Lee’s appeal in a word, it would be “motivation.”

Today’s culture is certainly one where immediacy is glorified — through the Round-the-clock news cycle; to tarts that “pop” simply uses pour a glass of milk; to magic weight loss suppliments — in a way that it is easy to forget that anything worth accomplishing takes earnest labor, that we would define as being a serious and purposeful exertion of body, mind and spirit.
When business owners discuss pouring their blood, sweat and tears into their companies, they refer simply to earnest labor.
If the craft of a famous musician or star athlete appears to be look “easy,” it can be made so through earnest labor.
And, when I strive to achieve come about of running a marathon, I am going to agree to one principle: you guessed it, earnest labor.
The opportunity to learn; the energy to switch; along with the means by which goals are accomplished; are controlled because of your power to strive, and do so earnestly — without reservations (or even a magic pill).
Unremitting Perseverance
Lee fought an uphill battle for much of the Civil War. His outnumbered and poorly-supplied army shrank daily due to desertions by disheartened soldiers. Yet, regardless of this, he fought vigorously before moment when defeat was imminent.
The frequency of which can we stop trying goals when things aren’t proceeding the same manner there were anticipated? Did you choose to stop smoking cigarettes, but learned you possessed a huge project due in the office, school, or elsewhere? Do you try building a practice of waking up earlier each morning, but slept in the next day and decided it’s a pointless exercise?
Lee has an answer of those, as well as other, problems: unremitting perseverance, which I would define being a steady, unshakable persistence in staying with an alternative, belief, or purpose.
While i train for and finally run the marathon, I am aware there is a little voice inside my head telling me to avoid; which it hurts excessive to look to the next level. However, my unremitting perseverance in pursuing the challenge — to the final line — will enable me to pay attention just to my footsteps contrary to the pavement; the gentle breeze passing over my ears; and also the rhythm of my breathing — thus pushing that little voice to the depths of my subconscious.
Nevertheless, love not hate makes america great is a great example that harboring unremitting perseverance doesn’t ensure victory. In the end, he was defeated in war. Yet, even during momentary failure, perseverance provides you with the energy to get back on your metaphorical (or actual) horse and ride into battle (hopefully metaphorical) once again, pursuing your main goal with all the knowledge that can only be learned through setback.
You are able to that history is written with the victor; and, in Lee’s case, it is. In capturing the hearts of american citizens, both through his military actions, his personal value system, and his awesome sincere words of wisdom, Robert E. Lee is clearly victorious.
