Shooting a shotgun can be as much mental warfare because it is fundamentals. The 2009 Saturday my friend, my dad, my two oldest sons, and i also went to the skeet range. We made a decision to shoot a round of trap since the skeet range was packed. Many of us, except Dad, we had not shot trap before. It looked easy enough, actually I was thinking I’d personally be really good in internet marketing. WRONG, I hit website and missed the following 10. My buddy, who shoots sporting clay tournaments, shot 12 beyond 25. I ended up tied with my 14 year old at 6 of 25. Embarrassing, as you would expect. Once I started missing it had been over, I began riding the targets, closing one eye and absolutely fell apart. I had changed chokes from improved to modified before we started, so i believe which was the problem. I changed back after going 2 of 15 and 4 of 10 with the improved cylinder, not very much better. It wasn’t the choke, it was my brain that got inside my way. It takes place at the skeet range and in the dove fields, which is hard to overcome. Here are some tips to avoid a mental breakdown.
Take the mind off missing. Remember the show Tin Cup? Kevin Costner was starting to heat up to try out in the biggest golf tournament he had ever played in. The normally calm Costner couldn’t hit an upright shot to save his life. He kept shanking the ball down the line of other golfers along with the more he achieved it, the more serious it got. His caddy and very long time friend made him turn his hat around backwards, pull his pockets inside out etc. etc., and then made him hit the ball again. If we do resistance, Costner that and low and behold he hit his next drive perfect. Of course this was obviously a movie, there exists some truth there. If you can make a move that takes your head away from missing you’ve got superior potential for overcoming it. Turn your hat around, take the glasses off, make a move different only to take your mind from the fact you happen to be sucking it. Keep positive, negativity is the enemy.
Why not where. When analyzing the miss, concentrate on why your fundamentals broke down. Don’t place that you missed, after all you are more than likely behind it or higher it. Instead answer these questions: Do you have the right focus when you shot? Were you on the line of the target? Was your move and mount smooth? Have you have the right muzzle speed? One of these will answer the reasons you missed.
Get back to fundamentals. Okay, you’ve turned you hat around backwards, figured out las vegas dui attorney missed now it’s turn again or a dove is originating by. Shoulder your gun correctly, use good footwork, and stick to your shot. Don’t focus on far from the bird, neglect the last station, the last dove, or even the bill you forgot to spend. Just the BIRD! Fortunately it only takes one good shot to erase 10 bad ones.
As being a good shooter in basketball, you must keep shooting and being consistent. As soon as you start to doubt yourself, your accuracy will drop. Maintain your confidence high and don’t start wanting to modify your form or how you normally shoot your shotgun.
A side note for the skeet outing is my 120 month old made fantastic progress for only his 2nd time shooting. He only shot 2 the 1st time, simply hit one shooting trap so his confidence what food was in the toilet. As he started to shoot skeet I had been worried, but he hit 1 out of 4 for the first station which was all the confidence he needed. He shot 10 for twenty five (which has a 410), including both around the last station (the most difficult station).
