As with most sex work, webcamming doesn’t contain the best reputation. It’s often considered exploitation or possibly a last-resort hustle to debt, but Reed Amber, 26, explains how webcam models are simply your average self-employed freelancers with similar volume of agency and independence anyone else.
Model, producer and co-creator of YouTube channel ComeCurious, Reed is essentially the physical embodiment of sex positivity, which she defines as “trying to make people seem like what they’re doing along with what they’re into isn’t wrong, it’s normal and it’s absolutely fine.” She’s a tremendous advocate for removing stigma and taboos around sex, and now we swept up along with her to understand more about webcamming, a type of sex work that’s seldom talked about.
Why do you think that some men, and probably women at the same time, prefer it to porn?
“There’s a great deal free porn which i feel webcamming is more of a personal one-on-one. You are able to go online and find any ol’ stuff, but webcamming is a bit more personal; it’s tailored exactly from what you want and just what you’re trying to find. You’re not sharing it with 100 thousand others. Here is your show. Usually you develop a relationship, I talk to you being a friend and i also respect you like a person. ‘How has your entire day been, what do you get from the shops, exactly what are you cooking for dinner…’ it’s just like an online relationship”
…So it’s similar to the ‘girlfriend experience’?
“Yes, it’s simular to the girlfriend experience. But that also is dependent upon just what the webcam model is much like plus what the person paying is like because people want something more important.”
Maybe you have had avoid a request?
“I’m definitely one in the cam girls who does rarely say no. I’ve always wanted to try something totally new, but that’s not because I felt like I needed to. It’s just personally a few things i might like to do. I would like to tick stuff off my list, I must try everything once particularly when it comes to sex positivity. Regardless of whether it’s something I’m definitely not into, I’d still try it. Basically didn’t enjoy it, I’d resemble ‘sorry, I’m certainly not into that.’ But there’s a number of people that could say no to a lot of things.”
What are the really common requests that you will get?
“It depends on the profile that you set up because when you make a profile, you are writing a bit bio about you, and my bio might be seen as somewhat more ‘out there’. I’m open to anything, like roleplay, so most of the time I get roleplay requests, more just because I have discovered them fun it doesn’t matter how unusual or bizarre they may be. What excites me are uncommon and unusual requests that you wouldn’t really come across. Life’s too boring otherwise”
How do people react if you inform them what you do?
“I get yourself a blend of emotions. Mostly people react positively due to the way I speak about it. It’s so different if you’re really shy and timid and quiet about it. It immediately sends out this idea of ‘oh they’re not completely comfortable with it.’
Basically you are free to become your sex-positive self on your full potential…
“Exactly! That’s where I got my first taste of sex positivity. Going through my relationships and going to school I was like ‘woah, nobody thinks the way I do, I have to be weird’. But being a webcam model, I realised everybody is into different things, they merely feel like they can’t talk about it.”
