Every hairstylist remember the moment they became captivated by hair and also the desire for creativity that it inspires. The tale had not been different for U.S. Marine Corps veteran Kristyl Rodrigues who discovered her adoration for hair while enrolled at Bellus Academy’s school of cosmetology in Poway, California. There Kristyl was studying cosmetology and pursuing a professional beauty education. First: Inspiration Can Strike Anywhere
Kristyl joined the Marine Corps in 2014 and was enlisted at the age of 19. Her first duty station is at Okinawa, Japan, then an industry operation in Korea. Weekly during Kristyl’s time in Korea, a barber would check out the site and give haircuts on the Marines. But then, this happened: “I is at a tent doing my own, personal hair,” shares Kristyl. “I would likely do shape ups and line ups personally, nothing too crazy, once i were built with a Marine Sergeant come up to me and enquire of me to get a haircut. I had created never cut anybody’s hair before on the other hand jumped strait into it anf the husband wound up loving it…and regarding his outreach and leadership, literally the very next day, I had created 13 Marines aligned for me personally.”
This is actually the first moment that Kristyl considered barbering like a future career-she concluded on charging $5 a haircut knowning that is it. Having a strong intrinsic motivation and entrepreneurial spirit, she worked overnight shifts on guard duty from 12a.m. to 8a.m., then cut hair throughout the days. What Kristyl learned was profound: Hairdressers touch more hearts than heads each time you service a customer, there’s impact.
The Impact of your Haircut
“As a Marine, the factors for appearance are at an all-time high. The uniform needs to be squared away and ironed. Everything needs to be flush, measured properly-there’s a great deal of awareness of detail,” shares Kristyl. “I was considering Marines from top to bottom. It tore up my heart because we’re the best people of the nation and now we have to be running around therefore. That’s the place that the impact over the internet and heart came from, and i also wanted to be able to transmit that through my hands to folks around me…and keep these things walk around feeling proud and good from top, and representing this nation therefore.”
Similarities In Service: Military & Barbering
After getting back from service, Kristyl asked herself exactly what the next challenge and chapter in their life would be. That’s when she chose to pursue her education being a barber at Bellus Academy. Gaining knowledge from her very own history and anticipating, she found many similarities in their service and becoming a barber.
